5 Things You Need To Know Before Starting A Keto Diet
The Ketogenic Diet, often referred to as the ‘Keto Diet’, is one of the most intensive, but rewarding diets in existence. It requires a fair degree of discipline to really see great results, but those results are usually more than worth the effort!
However, many people don’t actually know what a keto diet is, what it is for, what it involves, and whether it is right for them. After all, following a keto diet improperly can lead to very unsatisfying results and may even lead to weight gain.
So what are some of the most important things that you should know ahead of starting on a keto diet? Let’s find out together!
#1 – You Must Stick With It:
If you truly want to see the incredible results of a keto diet for yourself, you need to make sure that you stick with it. Many people would insist that Keto is more than just a diet and that it is in fact a way of life.
A ‘diet’ suggests that one can simply go on and off of said diet on a whim. However, if a person following the Keto diet were to go from ardently following the diet to allowing themselves a ‘cheat day’, they could very well mess up their metabolism and end up gaining more weight!
This is because the keto diet operates by sending the body into Ketosis, which causes the body to burn away fat rather than carbs, as it usually does. This is why keto is a strictly no-carb diet. If one were to suddenly introduce lots of carbs into the keto diet, their body may become confused, and put on weight.
#2 – Get Support:
Sticking to a keto diet can be quite difficult. Knowing where to start, and how to organize your life around keto can be quite a challenge, so having a resource close to hand can make it all much easier. Perhaps you have a favorite keto website that introduced you to the diet or a close friend who convinced you to get started. Whichever it is, make sure to ask them any questions you may have, so that you can bring your Keto dreams to life.
Not having a healthy support system during the keto diet could cause the diet to fail outright, so it is crucial that you have somewhere or someone to turn to.
#3 – You Should Do Your Homework Ahead of Time:
You’ve got to know what you’re doing. Make sure to fully research the diet before you attempt to do it so that you can get the results you want. Look into the foods you can and cannot eat, how much you can eat, and how long you should expect to be following the diet to get the results you are looking for.
You will also want to check to make sure that the diet is right for you. Are there other diets that can help you to achieve your weight loss goals that might be less intensive? If so, we recommend trying those. Keto might also prove detrimental to certain people, such as diabetics, or those with kidney problems or blood sugar problems. The intense changes to what you eat can cause a keto diet to have detrimental effects on such people.
#4 – Be Prepared for the Keto Flu!
It doesn’t happen to everyone, but many people who start on the keto diet find that they experience cold-like symptoms within a week. Don’t worry if it does happen to you, as it is completely natural. It is caused by the body being in shock as it is transitioning from using other sources of energy to using fat to create energy.
You are also more likely to experience the keto flu if you are swapping a diet of highly specific foods for totally different keto-specific foods. Just make sure that you have plenty of water close to hand, and that you maintain a good level of exercise alongside the diet.
#5 – The Keto Diet is Fat-Focused:
During the course of the keto diet, you may find yourself eating foods that you wouldn’t expect to hear used in the same sentence as ‘diet’. This is because the diet is focused on providing the body with lots of fat to create energy and send the body into ketosis. As such even some very healthy foods need to be avoided while on the diet.
Make sure to research what you can and cannot eat on a keto diet!
